This Halloween, children visiting Willow Glen’s Trick-or-Treat Trail will have the chance to take home something that lasts long after the candy is gone: a free book of their choice.

 

Books for Treats, a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging children to discover the joy of reading, will once again bring its popular book giveaway to Lincoln Avenue. For more than two decades, the organization has made books part of the Halloween tradition, giving preschool and elementary-school children an opportunity to choose a book that captures their imagination.

Founded in 2001, Books for Treats believes that giving children the opportunity to choose their own books can help turn reading into something they look forward to—not simply something they are expected to do.

 

On Friday, October 30, volunteers will help each child select one FREE book at the Garden Theater, 1165 Lincoln Avenue:

• 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. — for kindergarten-aged children and younger.

• 3:00 p.m.–4:30 p.m. —for children in 1st through 6th grade.

“Every year, I love watching children’s faces light up when they find a book that speaks to them,” said Rebecca Morgan, founder of Books for Treats. “Halloween is already filled with excitement and imagination, so it’s the perfect time to give children another kind of treat—one that can take them on countless adventures long after October 31.”

 

Books for Treats welcomes support from families, schools, community groups, and organizations. Donations of new or gently used children’s books, as well as financial contributions to help purchase books

for future events, help make the program possible.
