Willow Glen’s Halloween Tradition: Books for Treats

October 30, Willow Glen — This Halloween Eve, children on Willow Glen’s Trick-or-Treat Trail will receive more than candy—they’ll take home the gift of reading. The non-profit organization Books for Treats will once again be giving out free children’s books along Lincoln Avenue as part of its long-standing mission to turn trick-or-treating into a celebration of literacy.

Since its founding in 2001, Books for Treats has provided pre-school and elementary students with a free book of their choice each Halloween. The organization believes that just one great book can spark a lifelong love of reading.

On Thursday, October 30, volunteers will help each present child select 1 FREE book at two Willow Glen locations:

• 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. in front of Bertucelli's La Villa Gourmet Italian Deli (1319 Lincoln Ave) for kindergarten-aged children and younger.

• 3:00–4:30 p.m. at the Garden Theater (1165 Lincoln Ave) for 1st through 6th graders.

“Books are treats for the mind,” said Rebecca Morgan, founder of Books for Treats. “When children choose a book that excites them, they get more than a Halloween memory—they discover that reading can be fun, inspiring, and magical.”

Families and organizations interested in supporting the program are invited to donate books or contribute funds to help purchase titles for next year’s event. For more information or to get involved, visit www.booksfortreats.org or contact Rebecca Morgan at imailto:info@BooksForTreats.org.
